UCHD still out of seasonal influenza
Asking public to adhere to CDC Priority Groups for vaccination

OUTDATED AS OF OCTOBER 15TH, Please see www.UtahCountyHealth.org for updated information.

The Utah County Health Department (UCHD) will once again be administering Novel Influenza A H1N1 vaccine on Thursday. Due to limited supplies, UCHD officials are asking the following priority groups to be given the first opportunity to get the vaccine:

  • Individuals age 6 months through 24 years
  • Individuals age 25 through 49 years who...
    • lives with or cares for infants younger than 6 months of age or,
    • are health care or emergency medical personnel

"It isn't that we don't want everyone vaccinated," said Lance Madigan, UCHD public information officer. "We are just most concerned with those individuals that has shown to be most susceptible to the disease. We want to give them the first opportunity to be vaccinated."

Vaccination Clinics will open Thursday at the Utah County Health and Justice Building (151 S. University Ave, Provo) and continue while supplies last. Thursday the clinic will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and re-open on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The vaccine is free, but UCHD may bill insurances for administration fees. People are being asked to bring their insurance cards with them.

For those who aren't able to get the vaccine, the UCHD suggests the following preventive measures:

    • Wash hands frequently or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Avoid those who are sick -- if you are sick, stay home until 24 hours after fever has gone away without fever-reducing medicine.
    • Cough into an elbow or sleeve.
    • Get plenty of rest and eat properly.

At present, the UCHD is out of seasonal influenza vaccinations as well. Residents are encouraged to check with the UCHD web site (www.UtahCountyHealth.org) or call the Utah County Health Information Line at 801-851-2222 for exact availability of both vaccines. "You can also sign up for Twitter updates, follow us on FaceBook, or check with 2-1-1," said Madigan.
