A 59 year old Eagle Mountain man was booked into the Utah County Jail on felony domestic violence and child abuse charges after a standoff with SWAT.
On May 24, 2014, at about 9:40 A.M. Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office in Eagle Mountain were dispatched to investigate a report of a domestic assault. The call was reported by medical staff who treated the victim after she sought treatment for injuries she sustained the previous night, May 23, 2014. The victim reported that her husband assaulted their 8 and 10 year old sons with a broom handle and then assaulted her with the same broom handle. The boys sustained only minor injuries. The wife sustained injuries to her arm which were more serious but were not life threatening.
The woman told Deputies that her husband said if she called law enforcement he would do harm to anyone who responded. During this altercation the victim tried twice to call 911 and both times Bodrero took the phones from her and destroyed them. She also told Deputies that there were loaded firearms in the home, including a rifle and a shotgun. The suspect, James Wayne Bodrero, age 59, of Eagle Mountain, told a neighbor he wanted to get the police to kill him.
Deputies made contact with Bodrero by phone but he refused to come out of his house. At length he hung up and refused to talk. Because of the serious nature of the injuries to the woman, and because of threatening statements Bodrero made to her investigators had Utah County Metro SWAT and Lehi Police Department SWAT respond. Because of concerns about Bodrero’s stated intentions several surrounding homes were evacuated.
After several hours, and after investigators made phone contact with Bodrero again, he came out of his house and surrendered. Deputies took him into custody and booked him into the Utah County Jail. He was booked on charges of 3rd degree felony Aggravated Assault-Domestic Violence, 3rd degree felony Aggravated Child Abuse, 2 class B misdemeanor counts of Domestic Violence in the Presence of a Child and 2 class B misdemeanor counts of Interruption of Communication Device.
