***** UPDATE ***** On July 14, 2013, the Office of Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on the body of Nathan Tyler Haun, age 17, who was found dead in the middle of the road on Arrowhead Trail between Salem and Payson. The Medical Examiner determined that Haun died when he was struck by a vehicle. Detectives still do not know what kind of vehicle or by whom it was driven. They are continuing to interview witnesses who may have had interactions with Haun in the hours before his death. Detectives are asking that anyone having information that might help locate a vehicle and identify the driver of that vehicle call the Utah County Sheriff's Office at (801)794-3970. ***** UPDATE *****
On July 13, 2013, at about 5:30 A.M. dispatchers with the Utah Valley Dispatch Special Service District received a call from a woman reporting a man she believed to be dead in the middle of a road at 2000 West Arrowhead Trail. This location is just east of I-15 in a rural area between Salem and Payson. The woman said she had driven by the area at about 2:00 A.M. going to work and there was nothing in the road then. Detectives believe the this incident may have occurred between 2:00 A.M. and 5:30 A.M.
As Deputies and Detectives conducted their investigation they discovered evidence that led them to believe this might not have been just an auto/pedestrian accident. At this time the Sheriff's Office is not prepared to state what that evidence is or what other considerations are being investigated.
What we do know is that the victim is a male and appears to be in his late teens or early 20's and he sustained significant amounts of serious physical trauma. As the investigation was being conducted a Salem Police Officer who was assisting deputies found a man walking along a road about a mile from the incident. Detectives believe this man had some interaction with the victim during the hours before the body was found. Detectives are investigating the exact nature of that interaction and what other witnesses were there.
These are all the details the Sheriff's Office is able to release at this time. I will update and Tweet additional information as it becomes available.
