Impact of Fathers on Breastfeeding

Dads and Breastfeeding

Fathers have a big impact on breastfeeding. A father’s support and knowledge influences breastfeeding in many ways. Breastfeeding sometimes has challenges for mother, and father can help during those times. It is a good idea for father to learn all he can about breastfeeding to help mother be successful. There are many benefits that baby will receive from breastfeeding. It is easy for a father to provide support when he knows he is helping his baby.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed for the first six months. The AAP also recommends breastfeeding continue for at least twelve months along with solid foods. This is because breastfeeding is the healthiest option for baby. Fathers who know more about breastfeeding have babies who are more likely breastfed exclusively. Mothers who have partners that did not expect them to exclusively breastfeed often stopped earlier. They were also more likely to give formula.

Fathers also can affect how long mother breastfeeds. If father appears to prefer breastfeeding, then mother is more likely to breastfeed her child after six months. When father is not supportive mothers often do not breastfeed as long.

It is amazing what fathers can do! Fathers can give support to breastfeed. Babies that breastfeed exclusively and longer are healthier. What an incredible gift fathers are giving to their growing baby!
